Every now and then you come across an author whose books feel like a guaranteed good read — the sort of writer you return to again and again because you know you’ll be met with heart, depth, and characters who feel wonderfully real. For me, Laurelle Cousins is absolutely one of those authors, and her upcoming release A Shearer’s Run is another beautiful reminder of why she’s an auto-buy on my list.
This story follows LJ and Poppy, two people carrying their own bruises from the past and trying to find solid ground again. LJ is juggling grief, family expectations, and the pressure of keeping a shearing run afloat, while Poppy is recovering from a professional setback that knocked her confidence hard. When their lives cross paths, the chemistry is instant — but what really makes their connection shine is the way Laurelle writes it with honesty and tenderness.
One of the true standouts in this book is the friendship between Poppy and Adrian. Their bond is gentle, uplifting, and written with such warmth that you can’t help but smile every time they’re on the page together. Adrian brings a special kind of heart to this story, and their friendship is something I’ll remember for a long time. And then there’s Jazz, the wonderful Kelpie who adds charm and loyalty in that uniquely Aussie working-dog way — she’s an absolute delight.
Because Laurelle is a wool classer and sheep farmer herself, the farming elements in this book feel incredibly authentic. Whether you’ve grown up in rural Australia or are discovering this world for the first time, her knowledge shines through without ever overwhelming the story. It simply enriches it — giving readers a vivid, real sense of what it’s like to live and work in this landscape.
What I loved most is how A Shearer’s Run balances heartfelt romance with resilience, community, and the quiet courage it takes to start again. It’s warm and engaging, with moments that made me smile, ache, and cheer for LJ and Poppy as they navigate the road back to themselves — and hopefully to each other.
Laurelle Cousins continues to grow stronger with every book, and this one is no exception. If you enjoy rural romance with emotional depth, relatable characters, and a true taste of Aussie farm life, make sure this one finds its way onto your TBR.
