There’s something so comforting about returning to Barrington — like slipping back into a favourite seat at the book club table, cuppa in hand, waiting to hear what everyone’s been up to. The Secret Reader is another gem in Susan Mackie’s wonderful series, and I absolutely loved it.

This time, we catch up with familiar faces while welcoming a few new ones who slot perfectly into the fabric of the story. Each character brings their own challenges, heartaches and growth, and it’s all handled with Susan’s usual warmth and honesty. The book club itself feels like the heart of the community, offering more than just books — it’s where ideas spark, connections deepen, and healing quietly happens.

I was especially drawn to how everything came together so beautifully in the end. And yes — I actually guessed the secret reader (go me!) — but whether you do or don’t, it doesn’t take away from the joy of the journey.

Heartfelt, engaging and impossible to put down — 5/5
